~Mobility~

Australians with disabilities are forced to pay thousands of dollars for their medical equipment. They have to pay more money as opposed to people overseas because websites can't ship to Australia. Keran Howe, executive director of Women with Disabilities and George Taleporos, Youth Disability Advocacy Service manger have been advocating for these individuals. "If we were paying less for equipment then we could afford more of it and the government subsidies such as that provided to SWEP[State Wide Equipment Program] in Victoria would be able to reach more people," Howe said, "I would like to see an inquiry into the large price discrepancies" I think it wrong to deny equipment like this for any reason. Wheelchairs, walkers, canes, are just some of the things that enable the people who have a need for them to reclaim what little mobilization they can. To deny us of being able to attain these would be like traumatizing us yet again. I recall vividly the times when I was without the use of my motorized wheelchair. It was a truly difficult thing relying solely on others to transport me everywhere in my manual wheelchair.
